The risk of stroke is not homogeneous and varies considerably depending on the presence of several demographic and clinical factors. Independent risk factors for stroke in patients with AFib include congestive heart failure, hypertension, age ≥75 years, diabetes mellitus, prior stroke or transient ischemic attack, vascular disease and female sex.

The CHA₂DS₂-VASc score is recommended for stroke risk prediction in patients with AFib, by the European Society of Cardiology guidelines for the management of atrial fibrillation.⁽¹⁾

After all of the questions have been completed, it will be possible to download a file showing you all of the entries as well as your AFib patient’s stroke risk.  It can be used as a reference to inform your patient about his/her stroke risk as well as to discuss his/her best treatment options.
